Green Energy Storage

Green Energy has many facets. The wind may not blow the sun may not shine, then both may happen to excess.

Lead is a very malleable substance and when cast into battery plates manufacturers tend to use either calcium or antimony to “stiffen” the plate so that is can be worked. These alloys have different properties and effects upon the battery.

When a lead acid battery is discharged sulphation builds on the positive plates, as the battery is recharged this sulpation is recombined into the electrolyte. If a battery is not completely charged between discharges this sulpation can build and cause corrosion on the plate grid.

Enersys have developed a Thin plate pure lead (TPPL) battery (Odyssey) in which battery plates of pure lead are used. Pure lead is far more resistant to corrosion than any alloy of lead Therefore thinner grids/plates can be used without any loss of life (often the life is even greater).

Thinner plates mean more plates can be used in the same space, giving a greater surface area and hence a higher rate discharge ability. Having extra plates means lower internal resistance, allowing faster recharge, in fact much quicker than any other lead acid battery with less losses. Typically only 4% of the energy in a cycle would be lost where a typical lead acid battery would lose 10 to 15% of the energy.

As the time available to recharge can be relatively short with renewable energy sources, a TPPL battery can be returned to 100% state of charge far more easily and quickly. Other types of Lead acid batteries don't get the time to fully recharge and therefore run at only partial state of charge, this drastically reduces their cycle life.

Because batteries convert chemical energy to electrical energy heat is a catalyst and using a standard battery at high temperatures will affect both performance and longevity With the correct charging algorithm, the lower internal resistance of TPPL means charging at temperatures up to 50 deg C without affecting longevity is feasible.

Note not all Odyssey are suitable for cycling applications.

Why Electricity Bank?

The staff of County Battery Services are battery specialists with a wealth of knowledge in all types of Batteries and Charging Systems. To elevate confusion it was decided that a bespoke website dedicated entirely to electricity storage was needed www.electricitybank.co.uk

Over the last few years more and more enquiries have been made by customers trying to harness electricity in situations where there is no mains power. County Battery Services have become very adept at helping and advising in these situations.

More recently with more and more Solar panels being fitted to warehouse and private dwellings it is very clear that the bulk of the electricity that is generated is not consumed by the occupier. There are opportunities to store and use this surplus electricity when needed reducing electricity bills and carbon footprint

With the support of global manufacturers County Battery Services can tailor a solution for all you energy storage requirements
